Ah, Spring in the Sierras! Redbud blossoming in the Canyon, trees budding out, grape hyacinth pushing up through green grass in the yard and daffodils popping up everywhere! The Bagger has been languishing in the barn for months, but she’s had a few short runs locally. Still a bit nippy in the early AM, around 30 degress or so, but the Earth warms quickly after sunrise, which means riding weather is nigh.
One of my volunteer efforts is with the American Red Cross, for whom I serve as Director of Disaster Services for our little county.
Well, little in population, as we actually have about 2500 square miles of area, mostly within the Plumas National Forest. For that much area, we only have about 28,000 souls, many of whom are “snowbirds”……..they live here in the Summer and Winter in warmer climes. As for me, I moved from the city over 3 decades ago, just to experience the Four Seasons…. and they will, no doubt, plant me here when I leave the Planet for the Great Beyond.
Haven’t yet decided on whether or not to plant a garden this year, though I find myself pulling weeds and thinning out last years oregano. Nora, my Lady Friend of some 30 years, may push me a little harder in the next few weeks to get some “starts” underway. We will both, most likely, work again this year with the community garden project, known hereabouts as the Growing Gardners. Very satisfying to get one’s hand dirty, knowing that your labors will be rewarded with fresh, organic produce in a few months time……and be able to feed local hungry bellies as well.
Speaking of which, our local Community Supper is doing nicely. Begun on September 11, 2002, we’ve fed hungry folk for free each Wednesday evening at 6 PM. Many local churches of all faiths, service clubs, businesses and groups take a night, prepare and serve good food to any and all who show up. The idea has gained momentum and other communities are following suit. It’s a wonderful time of sharing a meal in a warm and friendly environment and a great way to meet neighbors, beyond a friendly wave at the store or on the street.
Times are tough for many folks and helping one another is a great way to relieve some worry, at some level. We’re on the planet for a reason and finding our purpose can be a Life’s Work.
May Creator help us find that purpose, then put the knowledge to good use…….
